DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team was defeated 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mars Lakeview Arena in a non-conference game versus No. 4 University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The Action
The first period proved to be the high point for the River Falls offense. The first goal of the game came from the short-handed Falcons eight minutes into the period from Dani Kocina. The Saints were unable to use the rest of their power play to answer. The next penalty, on the Saints this time, gave the Falcons the advantage. A second Saints penalty put them down two players, and Dani Sibley capitalized on the 5-3 play for the Falcons when she snuck one past the goaltender to make the score 2-0. The third and final goal of the period came from Haley Nielson for the Falcons, extending the goal deficit to 3-0, which would bring the teams to the first intermission.Â
Using the break to regroup, the Saints defense came out stronger in the second period, though the offense still struggled to get the puck near the net. The Falcons held the Saints to only two shots during the period, compared to the eight in the first period. Almost the entire period, and three power plays (one for the Saints, two for the Falcons), passed before River Falls added another point to the board, this one coming from Kathryn Larson to bring the score to 4-0.
The final period saw a weak start for the Saints after a late second period penalty carried over into the third. The Falcons scored the power play goal in the first 35 seconds of the period, the second Dani Sibley goal of the game, to bring the score to 5-0. With five minutes left in the game, Sibley collected her third goal of the game, making the score 6-0. CSS would have one more power play opportunity in the last three minutes of the game, but it could not find the goal, and River Falls took the shutout victory.
