DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell to Augsburg College 84-69 on Sunday in non-conference play at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
The Action
The Auggies held the lead for the opening four minutes of the game before Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) put the Saints in front for the first time at 8-7 at the five minute mark. Later, a Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) layup put the Saints up 10-9, but the Auggies closed the quarter on a 17-5 run to take a 26-15 lead into the second quarter. Augsburg's bench contributed 12 of the team's 26 points in the quarter. Brannen led the Saints with seven points in the quarter.
 
The Saints got the margin down to eight on a couple of occasions in the second period, but Augsburg stretched the margin to 18 in the final minute of the half. Brannen scored another layup in the final moments of the half to make the halftime score 47-33 Auggies.
 
St. Scholastica committed 14 turnovers in the first half resulting in 16 Auggie points. CSS was also only 1-of-6 on 3-point attempts, while Augsburg was 7-for-13.
 
The Saints could not get within single-digits in the second half as Augsburg cruised to an 84-69 victory.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Brannen recorded a career-high 21 points and also matched a team-high with six rebounds. Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) was the only other Saint in double-figures with 11 points. Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had eight points, five assists and six rebounds off the bench. Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) also had eight points and six rebounds.
 
Top Performances for the Opponent
K'Aesha Wubben led five Auggies in double-figures with 15 points. She also had a team-high six assists. Aiza Wilson added 13 points and Bridget Bednar had 11 points and six rebounds off the bench. The Auggies improve to 5-0 this season, including four wins against Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) programs.
 
Up Next
The Saints (0-5) begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play next Friday when they face North Central University. The game will be played at Crown College in St. Bonifacius because of a schedule conflict at North Central's gym. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
