MEQUON, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The College of St. Scholastica women's hockey team closed out its four-game road trip with a 2-2 tie against the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons, which took place Sunday afternoon at the Ozaukee Ice Center in Mequon.
Scoreless First
The two teams found it extremely difficult to get the puck past the opposing goalies in the early going, as neither CSS or CUW could find any wiggle room between the pipes in the first period of play.
There was a total of 13 shots on goal in the period, with eight shots coming off the sticks of St. Scholastica skaters and the remaining five coming from the Falcons. Both teams had a power play opportunity, but goaltenders Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) of CSS and Breanna Thomson of CUW held their ground.
Power Play Galore in Second Period
Three of the four goals scored in Sunday's contest occurred in the second, with all of them coming off of power play advantages. The Falcons struck first when Veronika Metanova put one past Hartfield with 11 minutes remaining in the period to give CUW a 1-0 lead for the time being.
Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) matched Metanova's power play goal with one of her own later on in the second to tie the game at 1-1. Both Brenna Smith (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and Kennedy Houge (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) assisted on the Hanowski goal.
The tie was quickly broken, however, as 49 seconds later déjà vu occurred for Thomson and the Falcons. Hanowski, assisted yet again by Smith and Houge, put the puck in the back of the net for her second goal in under a minute of play.
CUW Scores & Ties in Third
The Falcons, after receiving back-to-back blows from Hanowki in the second period, were able to string together a game-tying goal with seven minutes remaining in the game.
The goal was scored by Lexi Holman and proved to be the final score on the day as neither team could break the tie in the remaining seven minutes of play in the third period as well as the overtime period.
The tie keeps the Saints above the .500 mark with an overall record of 4-3-1 (2-2-1 NCHA) while Concordia University maintains their .500 record at 3-3-1 (2-2-1 NCHA).
