MORRIS, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team saw its season come to an end Wednesday night after being swept by the University of Minnesota Morris in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinal match.
The Action
In the opening set, the Saints and Cougars were tied at 2-2 until Morris recorded 10 of the next 12 points to open up a 12-4 lead. Later in the set, the Saints rallied thanks to a 5-0 run to take a 20-19 lead after a kill and then a block, both by
Nikki Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS). However, a CSS service error ended the momentum and Morris responded with six straight points to take the set 25-20.
The second set began with both squads trading points until four straight kills by the Saints, including two by
Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS), gave St. Scholastica a 12-10 lead. The Saints led 15-13 and then the wheels came off as the Cougars recorded 12 of the next 13 points, with CSS committing five errors in that stretch, to take a two-set lead 25-16.
Morris did not trail in the third set and closed out the Saints 25-17 to advance to Saturday's tournament championship at the University of Northwestern.
