ASHLAND, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – In the first-ever women's soccer game under the lights at Ponzio Stadium, the St. Scholastica women's soccer team misplayed a ball that led to the game winner with 3:52 remaining in the second overtime to give Northland College a 2-1 victory over the Saints.
The Action
After the teams opened the conference schedule with a scoreless draw in Duluth on September 13, history would not repeat itself tonight as Northland got on the board four minutes and 11 seconds in on a Madeleine Wieland goal.
That was just one of two shots the LumberJills would get on goal in the first half, while the Saints had three shots on goal, two from
Janelle Rouillard (Dayton, Minn./Rogers HS).
Wieland tried to strike quickly again at the start of the second half on a free kick, but
Roni Rudolph (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minnesota-Duluth) ) denied her chance to extend the lead. A few minutes later, St. Scholastica found the equalizer when Ashland-native
Hannah Zeis (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS ) created some space and hit a perfect shot into the top left corner of the net to make it 1-1 in the 56
th minute.
The final 10 minutes of the second half saw near misses by both teams as Zeis would hit the post on a long shot, while Wieland hit the crossbar for the 'Jills. Like the first meeting, 90 minutes was not enough to decide the outcome as the contest went to overtime.
In the first 10-minute overtime period, the Saints put two shots on goal, while the LumberJills had one on goal, but both were stopped by the 'keepers so we went to a second overtime still tied at 1-1.
With less than four minutes remaining in the second overtime, St. Scholastica attempted to play a ball back to the goalkeeper, but did not give it enough pace and Wieland took advantage for Northland getting to ball first and hitting strike into the net to give the LumberJills a 2-1 victory. For Wieland, it was her second straight game with an overtime winner.
Notable Performances
Rouillard had five of St. Scholastica's nine shots on goal. Rudolph finished with four saves. Wieland had five of Northland's six shots on goal. Goalkeeper Emily Romuald made eight saves to earn the win.
