DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com)- The College of St. Scholastica volleyball team played to its strengths as it defeated Northland College in a conference match with a straight sweep of 3-0. This is the 13th consecutive sweep for the Saints against Northland and the 43rd straight win.
The Action
In the first set, a block by
Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) and
Amanda Belden (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) got the Saints on the board first for an early lead 1-0. The Saints would maintain this lead throughout the first set. This lead included a 10-point score streak that would include four different service errors by the LumberJills and six separate kills by the Saints. Northland became frustrated by this, as the score was 20-5, the Saints leading. CSS would go on to win this set 25-9.
St. Scholastica struggled in the second set. After the Saints won their first point, Northland stepped up their game, taking the lead at 7-2. St. Scholastica took a timeout to regroup, which helped gain some momentum back. CSS fought back after this timeout to take the lead again late in the set at 17-6. They would go on to win the set 25-18, with the final point being a kill from
Christaia Houser (Esko, Minn./Homeschool).
The Saints dominated the third set. CSS again took the first point, and would continue to lead until the end of the set. The LumberJills fought back with a long last rally on the final point, but it was not enough to stop the Saints, who won this final set 25-10.
Belden led the Saints in kills with 11.
Nikki Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) was close behind with 10; Houser had nine.
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had St. Scholastica's 20 out of 40 assists.
Emily Kessler (Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway HS (Itasca CC)) assisted 18 times. In digs, seniors Belden and
Alex Barsody (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) tied with 10. Kessler had the second most, with five. The Saints had 13 service aces on the night led by
McKenzie Orr (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) with four.
