ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell to Northland College Saturday evening in by a final score of 55-48 after leading by as much as 14.
First QuarterCSS jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the first quarter with the final points coming on a
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) layup.
The Saints would follow their initial 7-2 run with an 8-4 run to cap the quarter, and at the end of the first led by a score of 15-6.
Second QuarterCSS built up a lead as high as 14 points at 21-7, but failed to hold it as Northland would go on a 14-4 run to set the score at 25-21 with 2:59 to go in the half.
The Saints would have taken a three point lead into the halftime locker room, but a LumberJill layup with just five seconds remaining set the halftime score at 29-28 with the Saints barely holding onto their one point lead. VanKempen had seven of St. Scholastica's 14 points in the quarter. Northland out-scored the Saints 12-0 in points off turnovers in the quarter.
Third QuarterNorthland would tie the game up at 32 apiece in the third quarter with 7:21 to go, and then take the lead 1:21 later at 34-32.
The Saints would keep the score close as the LumberJills only managed a lead as big as four points in the quarter, and at the end of the third quarter the Saints trailed by just one point thanks to a
Leah Hamm (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the quarter.
Fourth QuarterIt took nearly three minutes for a team to score in the fourth quarter. Hamm got the scoring started by giving the Saints a one point lead at 39-38 with 7:04 to go.
Unfortunately for the Saints, that would be the last time they would lead in the game as the LumberJills quickly regained the advantage and slowly crept the game out of reach as they escaped the Saints en route to a 55-48 win.

Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) led the way for the Saints with 14 points, while VanKempen added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Up NextSt. Scholastica (8-12, 5-6 UMAC) will next be in action this Friday when they host the University of Minnesota Morris with that game set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. in the Reif Gymnasium.
