DECORAH, Iowa (csssaints.com) – In a back-and-forth game, Linfield College (Ore.) struck last, scoring two runs in the sixth to end the St. Scholastica softball team's season 6-4 on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Decorah Regional, hosted by Luther College.
The Saints, who were the home team in the contest, got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single by
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) to plate
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS).
After
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) struck out the side in the top of the second,
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) led off the bottom frame with a home run to left field to extend the CSS lead to 2-0. The Saints ended up stranding the bases loaded in the inning.
With two quick outs in the third, the Wildcats started a two-out rally with a walk and a RBI double. That was followed by a RBI single to tie the contest at 2-2. Linfield took its first lead of the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run to right center to make it 4-2.
CSS battled back in the bottom of the fourth when
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) scored on a Mizera groundout. Later in the inning,
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) drove in
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) to tie the game at 4-4, but Schiro would be thrown out on the play to end the inning.
It remained tied until the top of the sixth when the Wildcats picked up a sacrifice fly and then a big two-out RBI single to make it 6-4. Fast-forwarding to the bottom of the seventh, the Saints got the leadoff batter on, but an unlucky double play ended any type of rally as Linfield survived to play another game with a 6-4 victory.
Mizera struck out seven in the loss, while Linfield used three pitchers, with its ace Montana McNealy earning the win in relief. Warren was 2-for-4 offensively for CSS.
The Saints end their season with an overall record of 31-16. CSS will say goodbye to a pair of seniors:
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) and
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS). For future St. Scholastica softball information keep checking
