MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team lost both games of a doubleheader, 7-3 in game one and 3-2 in game two, against Gustavus Adolphus College on Monday night in its final contest of the regular season.

Game 1 – Gustavus 7, CSS 3

The Gusties jumped out to an early lead in game one scoring twice in the bottom of the second inning. Kailey Morgan doubled down the left field line and then a fielding error on a Paige Breneman sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with nobody out. Nathalee Bossiere would put GAC up 1-0 with a RBI ground out and the second run would score unearned on a Jena Willis sacrifice bunt with the Saints being credited with another fielding error on the play.

The Gusties pushed their lead to 3-0 in the third inning with Rachel Malo hitting a leadoff triple and then scoring on a fielder's choice. GAC would do more damage in the fourth inning after loading the bases with two outs. Rachel Malo hit a RBI single and then Shelby Nosan hit a grand slam home run to put Gustavus up 7-0.

The Saints would finally get a run across in the fifth inning on a Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) RBI single and then Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) brought a second run in on a fielder's choice to make the score 7-2. St. Scholastica looked to start a rally in the top of the seventh inning with a Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) double followed by a Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) single putting runners on second and third with nobody out. CSS would end up only getting one run home after a double play and strike out ended the inning.

Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) gave the Saints a strong start pitching six innings while allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Mizera also added five strikeouts.

Hannah Heacox started the game for the Gusties pitching two shutout innings and allowing just two hits to go along with five strikeouts. Jena Willis picked up the win for Gustavus getting through the final five innings while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

Game 2 – Gustavus 3, CSS 2

In game two of the doubleheader matchup Gustavus again took an early lead going up 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a Kailey Morgan RBI double.

The Saints, however, would answer back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. With runners on second and third Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) hit a RBI single to center and then a misplay by the outfielder allowed another run to score giving CSS a 2-1 lead.

GAC would take the lead for the final time in the fourth inning, going up 3-2, after a pair of Saints fielding errors allowed two runs to come across.

Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) got the start for St. Scholastica allowing just one earned run over 3.1 innings. Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) completed the game for the Saints pitching 3.2 shutout innings while giving up just two hits.

Sarah Rozell got the win for Gustavus, her 11th of the season, pitching all seven innings while allowing two earned runs, five hits, and striking out five.

St. Scholastica will begin its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament play on Friday at Kenwood Field as the No. 1 seed. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
