DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team dominated Crown College on Friday afternoon in its conference doubleheader. The Saints took the first game 8-0 and the second game 11-4 at Kenwood Field.

Game 1: CSS 8, Crown 0 (F/6)
The Saints shut Crown down completely and were red hot on offense with two home runs.

The Saints scored first in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run home run from Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS). Her homer also brought in teammate Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) who had hit a single during her at bat.

St. Scholastica scored again in the fifth inning. Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) led off with a single. She then stole second base and teammate Carly Safranski (Argyle, Minn./Stephen-Argyle Central HS) hit a single out to right field to advance Jazdzewski home for another run for the Saints. Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) grounded out while Safranski headed home to give the Saints a 4-0 edge. Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) hit another two-run home run to clear the bases and put the Saints 6-0 on Crown.

CSS added two runs in the sixth inning. Credited with one RBI in the final inning was Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS). Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) advanced on a fielding error to finalize the score 8-0.

Mizera had another solid six-inning performance on Friday. In 89 pitches she only allowed four hits and had seven strike outs.

Game 2: CSS 11, Crown 4
Crown put up a good battle but was unable to stop the Saints offensive attacks in the second game of their doubleheader on Friday.

First to score was Crown in the top of the second inning off a single to right field to advance a runner home. The Saints answered back in the bottom of the third when McGuiness singled to advance speedy Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) home. Schiro had singled and then stole second base to put herself in a scoring position.

McCabe earned a single and Nikki Zierden (Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) ran for her. Zierden stole second and advanced to third and eventually home on a throwing error by the Crown centerfielder. The Saints held a 2-1 lead over Crown after four innings.

The fifth inning proved to be an exciting one in terms of scoring for both sides. A few walked batters and a series of hits allowed three runs for Crown. In the bottom half of the inning, the Saints retaliated with a hot offense. McGuiness doubled with bases loaded and gained three RBIs. Logergren followed up with a two-run homerun to center field. A double from Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) allowed her fellow teammate Carley Moisio (Hoyt Lakes, Minn./Mesabi East HS) to score the eighth run for the Saints.

Three more runs for the Saints came when Logergren homered to centerfield once again in the sixth inning. Logergren's swing was the final score for either team.

McGuiness was awarded the win for the Saints in the second game. She only allowed four runs on six hits and had four strike outs. Pitching the final inning for the Saints was Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) who didn't allow any hits and struck out two Crown batters.

CSS (19-10, 13-0 UMAC) looks to take down the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday. The UMAC game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Kenwood Field and can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
