MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The University of Minnesota Morris finished the first half on a 20-3 run and never looked back in ending the St. Scholastica women's basketball team's season Wednesday night 82-55 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinals.
The Cougars jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first seven minutes of the game, but the Saints climbed back into the game, tying it up twice at 18-18 and 20-20. However, CSS would only make one field goal in the final eight minutes of the first half, while Morris went on a 20-3 run to end the half and take a 40-23 halftime lead.
The Cougars out-scored the Saints 22-6 in the paint and converted 13 points off of 13 CSS turnovers.
The second half was all Morris as it shot a blistering 72 percent from the floor and won going away 82-55.
The Saints shot only 30 percent for the game, while Morris finished at 54 percent. The Cougars had a 46-20 edge in the paint.
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) had 16 points to lead the Saints.
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) added 15 points. Emily Auch led three Cougars in double figures with 19 points. She also added 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Morris (15-11) advances to play the University of Northwestern in the UMAC Tournament championship game Saturday night.
The Saints season ends with a record of 14-12. CSS will say goodbye to four seniors:
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS),
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)),
Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) and
Emily Glomski (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/Dhahran HS). The senior class finished with 55 wins, a UMAC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013.
