SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team shut down the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets on Wednesday night 4-1 at Wessman Arena.
Saints opened the scoring in the game with a goal from
Brandi Malwitz (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) in the first period. Assisting her were
Amanda Broman (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS) and
Brenna Smith (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS). CSS was unable to utilize a power play early on in the period. The score was 1-0.
UWS Hailey Adair was able to score a goal for her team early in the second period of play. The Saints responded about halfway through the second time-frame with a goal from
Kaitlin Johnston (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater HS) and her helper was
Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS). Saints led the Yellowjackets 2-1.
The Saints finished strong with two third period goals from
Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)). Her first goal came about six minutes into the final period of play and she was assisted by
Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)). She netted her second goal as an unassisted empty net score very late in the game.
Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) was in the net for the Saints on Wednesday and had 36 saves to earn the win. On the other end of the ice was UWS Megan Liekkari had 18 saves.
UWS's record drops to 15-10 overall. The Saints improve their record to 11-10-3.
The next game for CSS is against St. Norbert College on Saturday at 3 p.m. This will be the Saints' last regular season and conference game. The match-up will be held at the Mars Lakeview Area Arena. The action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
