DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell to Concordia College-Moorhead Monday night by a score of 84-68 in the Reif Gymnasium.
First QuarterCSS jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the game's two minutes behind a balanced scoring attack.
Concordia would answer the quick Saints run with a 14-3 run of its own spanning just under five minutes to take a 16-10 lead with 3:02 left in the quarter.
The Saints would scrape at the deficit playing competitive basketball, and at the end of the first quarter trailed by just three points at 22-19 following a
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) layup with 11 second left in the quarter.
Second QuarterConcordia would open the second quarter with a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 10 points at 31-21 with 6:44 to play in the quarter.
The Saints would quickly answer with a 7-0 run spanning just 1:50 to bring the hole back to three points with just under five minutes to play.
Over the next four minutes the Cobbers would scrape their lead back to 10 points at 41-31, but a late 6-0 run led by
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) cut the Concordia lead to four, and at the half the Saints found themselves down by a score of 41-37.
Third QuarterCSS would open the second half scoring the first three points to set the score at 41-40.
Unfortunately for the Saints, Concordia would then go on an 11-0 run spanning just about half of the quarter and with 4:46 left in the third CSS trailed by 12 at 52-40.
CSS would try and claw their way back into the game, but at the end of the third quarter Concordia led by 15 points at 62-47.
Fourth QuarterCSS never could regain their footing in the fourth quarter and trailed by as much as 27.
The Saints would manage to bring the deficit down a little, but it proved to be too late for a big run as the final buzzer sounded to an 84-68 loss to Concordia-Moorhead.
Top CSS PerformersKelsey Sorensen-Giffrow finished with a team high 24 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while VanKempen finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds on the day.
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) had 13 points and Brennan finished with 11 points.
Top Concordia PerformersOlivia Johnson finished with 23 points, 16 of which coming in the first half. Jenna Januschka had 16 points and Greta Walsh added 11 points.
Up NextCSS (1-5) will next be in action when it travels to New Ulm, Minnesota to take on Martin Luther in the UMAC regular season opener with that game set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
