csssaints.com) – The third-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh offense racked up 560 yards of offense, while the St. Scholastica football team could only manage 221 yards as the Titans advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs with a 48-0 victory Saturday at J.J. Keller Field.
First QuarterThe Saints kicked off to begin the game and attempted an onside kick. It would be unsuccessful as the ball rolled out of bounds. However, on Oshkosh's first play from scrimmage,
Xavier Rhodes (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) intercepted a Brett Kasper pass.
CSS got a 23-yard pass play from
Kyle Stepka (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) to
Nick Murphy (Glendale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep ) and moved the ball to the UWO 35-yard-line, but back-to-back sacks forced a punt.
On the ensuing possession the Titans drove the ball 92 yards on eight plays, thanks to a pair of big completions to Zach Kasuboski. Dylan Hecker capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge to make it 7-0 UW-Oshkosh.
The Saints responded nicely with a 12-play drive and moved into the Oshkosh red zone. Unfortunately, the Saints turned it over on downs as the quarter ended with the score still 7-0.
Second QuarterThe Titans opened the second quarter with a 14-play drive that resulted in another Hecker touchdown run on third down at the 3-yard-line to extend the lead to 14-0.
Later in the quarter, working with a short field, the Titans went with a reverse pass where wide out Sam Mentkowski connected with Cody Moon for a 25-yard score to make it 21-0 Oshkosh.
After another CSS turnover on downs at the UWO 30-yard-line, the Titans used the two-minute drill and converted a fourth down to setup a Greg Rand 42-yard field goal to make the halftime score 24-0. The Saints finished the first half with only one yard rushing.
Third QuarterAfter CSS went three-and-out to open the second half, Oshkosh made it 31-0 on Hecker's third touchdown run of the day.
The Saints had a big pass play on their next drive, but fumbled at the end of the play and the Titans took advantage. Kasper hit Kasuboski for a 60-yard score to make it 38-0.
Fourth QuarterAnother big Titan pass play began the fourth quarter as it was Kasper again to Kasuboski for 54 yards this time to make it 45-0. Oshkosh would hit another field goal to make the final score 48-0, marking the first time the Saints have been shutout.
