Volleyball Goes 1-1 in Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team began the Nike/Eastbay Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament on Saturday with a four-set loss to Concordia College-Moorhead, but finished action with a sweep of University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
 
Concordia 3, CSS 1
The Saints dropped two close sets to Concordia on their way to a four-set defeat. The Cobbers took the first set 25-23, but CSS responded with a 25-17 victory in the second set. Concordia prevailed in the third set 25-22 and closed out the match 25-17 in the fourth set.
 
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) led the Saints with a 12 kills and 15 digs. Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) and Emily Bounds (Hill City, Minn./Hill City HS) each had eight kills. Emily Kessler (Blackberry, Minn./Greenway HS (Itasca CC)) led the team with 23 assists and Kariana DeYoung (Deer River, Minn./Deer River HS), along with Bounds, added four blocks. Concordia was led by Vanessa Johnson with 12 kills.
 
CSS 3, UW-Platteville 0
The Saints ended the tournament on a high note, sweeping UW-Platteville in three sets 25-14, 26-24 and 25-14.
 
It was Morrin again leading the way with 16 kills. Nikki Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) chipped in eight kills and Bounds added seven. Emily Jansen (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) led the Saints with 20 assists and Alex Barsody (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) had a team-high 15 digs. CSS finished with six service aces in the match.
 
Lauren Grady led the Pioneers with seven kills.
 
Up Next
The Saints (13-10) are back in action on Wednesday and they travel to face the College of Saint Benedict at 7 p.m.
