Saints Volleyball Drops First Home Match

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -The St. Scholastica volleyball team dropped its first home match against the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday. The Blazers swept the Saints 3-0 at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
CSS opened with two competitive sets while dropping the ball on the third set. The Blazers took the first set 25-22 with 18 kills against Scholastica's seven. The second set was determined by a 25-20 score. Saint Benedict killed the ball 14 times while CSS did it nine times. In the final set, the victors put down 14 kills while CSS put down seven of its swings for kills.

Individual highlights include eight swinging kills and two kill blocks from Gloria Ohaju (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS). Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) also spoke up in the match with three kills, four digs, and one kill block. CSS gathered three kills from freshman Christaia Houser (Esko, Minn./Homeschool). Tannyr Heyl (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS (Saint Benedict)), Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS), and Olivia Krejcarek (Manitowoc, Wis./Manitowoc Roncalli HS) each chipped in two kills in the match. Heyl also added two digs while Elvehjem aced one of her serves and Krejcarek put in one dig and one set assist. Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) played libero for the Saints and added three digs to the team's stats. Overall, the Saints had 23 kills, two aces, 27 digs, and two kill blocks while committing 18 errors against Saint Benedict.

The Blazers posted 46 kills, served five aces, and blocked seven times while digging the ball 39 times against the Saints. Saint Benedict committed 17 errors in the match. Leading the way for the Blazers were Laura Schmitt and Lexie Rinde with 11 kills each.
 
St. Scholastica (2-3) will play next on Tuesday at 6 p.m. versus Bethel University and 8 p.m. against UW-Superior in Superior, Wisconsin.
