Saints Volleyball Opens Conference Play with Sweep

NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica volleyball team soundly took down Martin Luther College on Friday in New Ulm at the Martin Luther Gym in its first conference match.
 
The sixth sweep this season for the Saints comes as a large one. In the first set, the Saints had four unanswered points with three of those tallies coming from Saints' kills. A kill by Kariana DeYoung (Deer River, Minn./Deer River HS) concluded the first set for the Saints' victory. The first set was determined by a score of 25-20. After giving up the first point of the second set, the Saints marched on for five points before the Knights scored again. Once again, CSS closed the set with a kill, but this time Olivia Krejcarek (Manitowoc, Wis./Manitowoc Roncalli HS) dealt the final blow. The score was 25-14. Scholastica got off to a slow start in the third set before sailing past the Knights once again to finish off the match with 25-18.
 
Scholastica's offense was strong both from the attack line and the service line. Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) lead the Saints with 10 kills backed up with one ace serve and four blocks. Jen Hortness (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) pitched in seven kills followed by Amanda Belden (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) with six kills and two blocks. Krejcarek and DeYoung each spoke up in the match with five kills and one block each. Christaia Houser (Esko, Minn./Homeschool) had her piece with three kills, one ace, and six blocks in the conference win against Martin Luther. Kirsten Eaton (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) also contributed one kill in the sweep.
 
The team as a whole had a whopping 27 kills in Friday's match against the Knights. Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) contributed 34 assists to her team. The Saints had six aces in the conference sweep. Morrin added 13 digs and Alex Barsody (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) chipped in 12 digs in the team's 66 total digs on the Knights. The Saints improve their record to 1-0 in UMAC play and 6-6 overall.
 
The Martin Luther Knights were led by Kira Grev with seven kills and two blocks and following her was Miranda Maasz with five kills and one block. Also contributing five kills was Sara Willems along with two blocks. The team had 25 kills, two aces, and 50 digs. The Knights' record falls to 4-10 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
 
The St. Scholastica Saints will play their next match on Saturday against Bethany Lutheran College in Bethany's North Gym at 1 p.m.
