Saints Win on Senior Night

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team had its first Senior Night as a program Saturday and defeated Marian University (Wis.) 5-1 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) match up.

The Saints honored seven seniors from Head Coach Jackie MacMillan's inaugural recruiting class before the game tonight.

There was no scoring for either team in the first period of play, although CSS led in shots 12-4.

In the second period senior Briana Stephens (Chicago, Ill./Hopkins HS (Minn.)) started the scoring one minute and 52 seconds in. Stephens was assisted by seniors Jana Henry (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate HS (Thunder Bay Midget AA Queens)) and Cara McMannis (Holland, Manitoba/Treherne Collegiate Institute (Pembina Valley Hawks)).

The Sabres responded about five minutes later when Paige Picard lit the lamp, unassisted.

Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) gave the Saints a 2-1 lead when she scored midway through the period, assisted by Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS (St. Cloud State)).

McMannis tallied her second assist of the game when she aided Stephens on her second goal of the game 56 seconds later. Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) also assisted on the goal

It took only 63 seconds into the third period when Logergren found the back of the net for a power play tally, her second goal of the game. Blair had her second assist.

Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) set the Saints win in stone when she was on the receiving end of a pass from senior Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) for the fifth and final goal.

Sheridan Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Ontario Hockey Academy) stopped 13-of-14 shot to earn the win. Amanda Alexander had 27 saves for Marian.  CSS was 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Sabres were 0-for-3.

The Saints (13-6-3, 11-3-2 NCHA) will host Finlandia University (Mich.) next Saturday at Mars.  Puck drop is at 8 p.m. Watch it live on Saints Sports Net.
