Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 58-52 loss at Martin Luther College Saturday afternoon.
The game started with the Saints taking an easy four point lead. The Knights quickly fought back scoring the next six points. At the nine minute mark, the Saints went on a 7-0 run to go up 19-11. The Saints led 25-22 at halftime.
The Saints were led by
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) with seven points. Mariah Schoof came off the bench for the Knights to score six points in the half. The Saints out-rebounded the Knights 28-18 in the first 20 minutes. Both teams went a combined 0-for-8 from beyond the arc. Martin Luther shot only 28 percent, but the Saints committed 17 turnovers.
Layups from Brittany Gossen and Anthon put the Knights ahead right away to start the second half. They went on a 9-0 run to secure a 31-25 lead. The Saints would battle back and the lead changed seven more times until Schoof sunk a 3-pointer with 6:32 left to put the Knights ahead.
The Saints cut the Martin Luther lead to one with 2:15 to go, but the Knights maintained their lead with free throws in the final minute to win 58-52.
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) led the Saints with 14 points.
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) also chipped in a double-double for the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Gossen led for Martin Luther (11-9, 8-2 UMAC) with 15 points followed by Anthon and Schoof with 11 points each.
Both teams shot poorly from outside the 3-point line, going a combined 3-for-22. The Saints had 27 turnovers compared to Martin Luther with 12. The 27 turnovers are the second-most this season and the most in a UMAC game.
The Saints (13-8, 8-2 UMAC) play next weekend at home with Crown College at 5:30 p.m. Friday night and the University of Minnesota Morris Saturday at 3 p.m. The games can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
