Brennan's 21 Not Enough in Loss to Gusties

MENOMONIE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – Junior Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) scored a career-high 21 points, but the St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell to Gustavus Adolphus College 71-58 Sunday in the consolation game of the Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
 
An early 11-0 run by Gustavus gave the Gusties an eight-point lead five minutes in. The Saints trailed by six midway through the half, but Gustavus went on a 10-0 run to go up 16. Gustavus led by as mush as 17 before St. Scholastica ended the half scoring the final seven points to make it 31-21 at halftime.
 
The Saints shot only 28 percent in the first 20 minutes, while the Gusties were 44 percent from the floor. Gustavus out-rebounded the Saints 25-11 in the half and had an 11-4 edge in second-chance points.
 
CSS started the second half like it finished the first half, scoring the first seven points in what ended up being a 14-0 run to cut the Gusties lead to three.
 
A pair of Holly Peterson (Rochester, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) free throws made it 45-43 Gustavus with less than 10 minutes to play. However, the Gusties responded with an 8-0 run to extend its lead back to 10. The Saints would only get as close as seven the rest of the way as the Gusties went on to win 71-58.
 
The Saints finished shooting 36 percent from the floor, while the Gusties were at 48 percent. Gustavus was 16-for-20 from the free throw line, while the Saints were 13-of-15. Gustavus finished with a 42-24 advantage on the glass.
 
Brennan scored 15 of her team-high 21 points in the second half. Brennan also led the team with seven rebounds. Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals. Mikayla Miller had a game-high 23 points to lead the Gusties (4-1).
 
The Saints (0-4) will next be in action on Monday, December 8 when they travel to Moorhead to face Concordia College. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
