DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica football defeated Eureka College 59-0 Saturday night at Public School Stadium.
The Saints came storming out of the gate against Eureka scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter alone.
Andrew Smith (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS) caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from
Tyler Harper (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) on St. Scholastica's opening drive. CSS quickly made it 14-0 on a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown by
Mitch Ejnik (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer HS ) who has taken one back in consecutive games.
Preston Robinson (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) added an 8-yard touchdown run for the Saints third score of the quarter and
Tyler Harper (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) found
Shane Finnegan (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) in the end zone for a 10-yard score just before time expired in the first quarter.
Andrew Smith (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS) scored his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter bringing a punt return back 88 yards to give St. Scholastica a 35-0 lead.
Mike Theismann (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) connected on a field goal from 48 yards out for the Saints next score. The field was the longest in program history breaking the previous record of 44 yards set by Theismann in 2012. Then
Tyler Harper (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) once again found
Shane Finnegan (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) in the last minute of the quarter for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Harper finished the game with three touchdown passes and one interception.
In the second half sophomore
Kyle Stepka (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) took over at quarterback for CSS. The offense was forced to punt on Stepka's first two drives before he led the Saints down the field for their seventh touchdown of the day. Stepka ran the ball in from a yard out. St. Scholastica would score once more on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Ben Britton (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) got the touchdown on a 3-yard run making the final score 59-0.
The Saints defense shutout their opponent for the first time this year. CSS held Eureka to just 117 yards through the air and an average of 3.4 yards per completion. CSS was equally stingy against the run allowing just 70 yards on the ground and a lowly 2.1 yards per carry.
Jared Moran (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) led St. Scholastica with eight tackles.
Blake Cedarleaf (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and
Alex Mangan (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) each added six tackles.
St. Scholastica improves to 7-0 on the season and remains perfect in the UMAC. Eureka drops to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in conference. The Red Devils were held off the scoreboard for the first time this season.
The Saints will take on the University of Minnesota-Morris next Saturday at 2 p.m.
