Notables:-St. Scholastica dedicated the game to Leukemia Awareness and Athletics Administrative Assistant Merissa Edwards who is batting Leukemia.-Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored three goals giving her 11 on the season. She leads CSS in scoring and is third in the UMAC in goals and points.-Madeleine Wieland of Northland scored her UMAC leading 14th goal of the season. Wieland also leads the UMAC in points.-Jalyn Britton (Eagan, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) registered her 10th assist of the season that is good enough for second best in the UMAC.-CSS remains undefeated in UMAC play with a 7-0-1 record.
DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team got back into the win column Saturday afternoon at Saints Field with a 7-1 victory over Northland College.
With the victory St. Scholastica improves its season record to 7-6-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. CSS has now swept its season series against Northland for the 13
th straight year. The LumberJills record drops to 6-7 overall and 2-6 in the UMAC with the loss.
The Saints put on an offensive display against Northland with
Jalyn Britton (Eagan, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) opening the scoring in just the 13
th minute for her fourth goal of the season.
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) doubled the lead for CSS in the 35
th minute for the first of her three goals in the game.
With only five minutes remaining in the first half, Madeleine Wieland found the back of the net for the LumberJills for her UMAC leading 14
th goal of the season to make it 2-1 going into the second half.
St. Scholastica quickly pulled away from Northland following the intermission by scoring five unanswered second half goals.
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) completed her hat trick with goals in the 49
th and 61
st minutes.
Casey Mitchell (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) increased the lead to 5-1 in the 73
rd minute for her second goal of the season and the LumberJills conceded an own goal in the 76
th minute to make it.
Abby Riemer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) added the final goal of the match in the 83
rd minute for her first goal of the season.
Jalyn Britton (Eagan, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) was credited with her 10
th assist of the season placing her second among UMAC players. With her hat trick performance, Kehtel climbed into third for the UMAC scoring lead with 13 goals. Kehtel is also third in the UMAC in points and first in shots on the season.
For the LumberJills Madeleine Wieland leads the UMAC points in addition to goals scored this season. Wieland recorded the only shot of the game for Northland with her goal in the 40
th minute. LumberJills' goalkeeper Emily Romuald made eight saves on the game and has the second most saves on the season for UMAC goalies.
This set of weekend games had special for the Saints soccer programs. Both the men's and women's teams wore orange jerseys in support of Leukemia Awareness and for Saints Athletic Administrative Assistant
Merissa Edwards who is currently battling the disease. During the game t-shirts were sold and following the games the Saints auctioned off the special orange jerseys with all proceeds going to the Edwards family.
St. Scholastica women's soccer is back in action on Friday in St. Bonifacius, Minn. to take on Crown College at 7:15 p.m.
