Box Score MEQUON, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team needed two goals in the final seven minutes to tie Concordia University (Wis.) 3-3 Saturday afternoon in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contest.
Just like yesterday, the Saints struck first on the power-play as
Kaitlin Johnston (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater HS) netted one six minutes into the opening period.
Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) and
Briget Cojocar (Limerick, Saskatchewan/Lafleche HS (Melville Prairie Fire)) had the assists. CSS led 1-0 at the first intermission.
The second period saw the Falcons out-shoot the Saints 14-9 and tie it up on a Nina Puch goal. The teams went into the second intermission tied at 1-1.
Just over two minutes into the third period, Concordia took the lead on a Baylee Darling goal. Then midway through the period Alexis Machuga added to the Falcons lead with a tally to make it 3-1.
The CSS comeback started shorthanded when
Briana Stephens (Chicago, Ill./Hopkins HS (Minn.)) scored to make it 3-2 with 6:20 left in regulation.
Cara McMannis (Holland, Manitoba/Treherne Collegiate Institute (Pembina Valley Hawks)) had the assist. Less than three minutes later, Johnston netted her second of the game on the power-play to tie at 3-3. Cojocar and
Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) were credited with the assists. The third period ended at 3-3.
In overtime, both teams would get a pair of shots on net, but none found the back of the net as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
The Falcons out-shot the Saints 36-31.
Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) had 33 saves for CSS, while Jennifer DeGeorge had 28 saves for the Falcons (6-11-1, 4-6-1 NCHA).
The Saints (10-5-3, 8-2-2 NCHA) will be on the road again next weekend for a pivotal road trip as they head to Adrian College (Mich.) on Friday and Lake Forest College (Ill.) on Saturday. Adrian is currently tied with the Saints in first place. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Eastern time.
