Saints Dominate Martin Luther

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team defeated the Knights of Martin Luther College Friday night 83-58 behind 17 points from Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) and 16 points from Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS).

The game was very tight through the first 10 minutes seeing a back-and-forth effort by both teams that included four ties and two lead changes.

It was not until the 10:34 mark in the first half that the Saints began to pull away.  With a score of 21-19 CSS in front, the Saints would go on a 20-6 run highlighted by four 3-pointers.  One by Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS), one by Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS), and two by Sorenson.

That run would last a total of seven minutes with the Saints going into the half up 45-28.

The second half was a back and forth effort again by both teams with the Saints maintaining their big lead. 

Martin Luther did manage to cut the lead to 17 points twice in the second half.  Once on a Hannah Hackbarth 3-pointer with just under 15 minutes to go, and again on a Brittany Gossen jumper with just over 14.

Nevertheless, the Saints were able to coast the rest of the way going up by as much as 29 points en route to an 83-58 victory.

Turnovers were the story of this game.  Martin Luther had a total of 22 turnovers translating to 29 points for the Saints.  The Saints also had 36 bench points and 32 points in the paint.

Schellbach and Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) each added 10 points for the Saints. Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) finished with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Hackbarth led the Knights (6-9, 3-1 UMAC) with 17 points.

The Saints (8-7, 3-1 UMAC) will next be in action tomorrow at 5 p.m. when they take on Bethany Lutheran College in the Reif Gymnasium.  Before that the Alumni game will take place at 12:15. View the BLC game live on Saints Sports Net.
