PREVIEW: Women's Basketball Hosts UMAC Games this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team will be at Reif Gymnasium this weekend when it hosts Martin Luther College on Friday and Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday. Saturday will also be Alumni Day.

Record:

-The Saints are coming off a split last weekend with their first conference loss to The University of Minnesota Morris 71-64 on Friday and a win over Crown College 82-45 on Saturday.
-Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) recorded a season-high with eight rebounds against Morris and Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) tied her season-high with eight, as well.
-Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) leads the Saints in scoring with a 10.4 points per game average. She is also leading the UMAC in 3-point percentage at 43.9 percent. Behind her in fourth is Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) at 35.7 percent.
-Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) has played as of late, recording double-figures in scoring for the last three games. Freshman Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) had a solid game against Morris with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.
-CSS has led at halftime in each of the last six games and is 4-2 during that stretch.
-The Saints are leading the UMAC in overall field goal percentage at 42.1 percent. They have also been strong defensively, leading the league in points per game allowed (62.0), opponents field goal percentage (.336) and opponents' 3-point field goal percentage (.230).

Martin Luther College Knights
Record: 6-7 (3-0 UMAC)

-Martin Luther is off to a 3-0 start in league play this season. All three of those wins came at home.
-The Knights are 6-1 at home this season, but are winless away from New Ulm with a 0-5 road record and one loss in a neutral site contest.
-The leading scorer for the Knights is Alex Anthon with 11.2 points per game, followed closely by Hannah Hackbarth with 11.
-Rebecca Engelbrecht is leading the UMAC in field goal percentage at 48.1 percent on average per game.
-Martin Luther is leading the conference with 85 points per game in the first three league games of the season. They are also leading the UMAC with 22.5 free throw attempts per game overall.
-The Knights were picked to finish fourth in the league this season, according to the preseason coaches' poll.

- The last time these two teams met was in last year's UMAC Tournament Semifinals, with the Saints taking a thrilling 83-78 overtime victory.

Bethany Lutheran College Vikings
Record: 4-10 (1-2 UMAC)
Head Coach: Tiffany Young Klockziem
-The Vikings are off to a 1-2 start in league play with their lone win coming against North Central on Friday 70-60.
-Jade Pelzl is the leading scorer for the Vikings and also leads the UMAC with 15.6 points on average per game.
-Kasslin Swenson averages 14.8 points per game and also averages 10.4 rebounds per game with puts her second in the UMAC.
-BLC leads the conference, averaging 70.6 points per game this season. They also lead the league with 42.5 rebounds per game, including 18 per game on the offensive glass.
-However, the Vikings are near the bottom in points per game allowed (77.6).
-BLC was picked to finish fifth in the league this season, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
Series History: (CSS is 13-5 vs. Bethany Lutheran)
-The Saints hope to continue their three-game winning streak against the Vikings. CSS won both contests last year by an average of 10 points.
