Four-Goal Second Leads Saints over Sabres

Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The sixth-ranked St. Scholastica women's hockey team erased a one-goal deficit after one period with four goals in the second period on its way to a 6-3 win over Marian University (Wis.) on Friday.

Recently named Swiss Olympian, Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)), scored twice in the contest to add to her nation-leading goal total (22).

Marian scored the lone goal of the first period on an Emily Everson goal with 2:16 left in the period. The Saints out-shot the Sabres 17-4 in the first 20 minutes.

Isabel Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Graubunden Canton School (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) got the Saints on the board one minute and nine seconds into the second period. Kelly Ahlgren (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) and Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) had the assists. Nina then gave the Saints the lead three minutes later. Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) and Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS (St. Cloud State)) had the assists.

The goals kept coming for the Saints as Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) made it 3-1 one minute and 26 seconds later. Just over a minute after that, Briana Stephens (Chicago, Ill./Hopkins HS (Minn.)) gave the Saints a 4-1 lead. Cara McMannis (Holland, Manitoba/Treherne Collegiate Institute (Pembina Valley Hawks)) and Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) were credited with the assists. The Sabres added a power-play goal later in the period to make it 4-2 after two periods.

Nina scored her second of the night eight minutes into the third period to make it 5-2. Isabel and Blair had the assists. Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS (St. Cloud State)) got an assist from Stephens with 3:23 to go for CSS's sixth goal of the night. Marian added a goal late to make the final 6-3.

Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) earned the win for the Saints, playing the final two periods. Hartfiel made 11 saves in the win. Amanda Alexander gave up four goals in the loss for Marian. Ali Glazer also made 22 saves for the Sabres. CSS out-shot the Sabres 49-17. Blair finished with three assists for the Saints.

The Saints (9-1-2, 7-1-1 NCHA) and Sabres (3-8-1, 2-4-0 NCHA) conclude their series tomorrow at 4 p.m.
