PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Travels to UMAC Champion Morris for Tournament Semifinals

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team will make the trek for the second straight year to the University of Minnesota Morris for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) semifinals to face the regular season champion Cougars on Wednesday.

About the Saints
Record: 11-14, 8-6 UMAC

  • The Saints fell in overtime in the regular season finale to Northwestern College 90-77 on Saturday. CSS had won its last two overtime games.
  • In the two losses against the Cougars this season the Saints were 9-for-22 combined (.409) from the free throw line.
  • CSS shot just 52 percent from the charity stripe in Saturday's OT loss to Northwestern.
  • The Saints have out-rebounded their last four opponents by an average of 11.8 boards per game.
  • CSS has recorded back-to-back 20-plus turnover games for the first time since late November.
  • Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) continues to lead the Saints in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game. Only twice did she not score in double-figures in UMAC play and one of those came against Morris when she was held scoreless.
  • Freshman Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) is averaging 17.8 points per game in the last four games.
  • In league games, the Saints were second in the league averaging 71.8 points per game. The leader was Morris averaging 75.3 points per contest.

Record: 18-7, 14-0 UMAC

  • Minnesota Morris enters the UMAC Tournament on a 16-game winning streak.
  • During that streak only two games were decided by less than double-figures and those were a 61-57 non-conference win over Trinity Bible and 60-59 triumph at Martin Luther. Those took place in back-to-back games towards the end of January.
  • Emily Mehr leads the conference in scoring, averaging 20.8 points per game, while Abby Fragodt is second in the league at 10.1 rebounds per game.
  • Sophomore guard Kendra Wycoff is also averaging in double-figures at 15.0 points per game.
  • Besides leading the conference in points per game, the Cougars also led in field goal percentage (.451), turnovers per game (12.4), blocks per game (4.4), personal fouls per game (12.5), and points per game allowed (47.6) in league games.

  • Morris took both games of the regular season by an average margin of victory of 14 points.
  • The Cougars have won four straight in the series and 17 of the last 18 meetings.
