Box Score WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The eighth-ranked St. Scholastica women's hockey team will be unbeaten headed into Thanksgiving after defeating Saint Mary's University 2-1 on Tuesday night in non-conference action.
Isabel Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Graubunden Canton School (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) broke a 1-1 tie in the third period with a power-play goal with 8:26 remaining.
Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)), who scored CSS's first goal of the game in the second period, assisted her sister for the game-winner.
The first 20 minutes of play went scoreless as CSS out-shot Saint Mary's 9-6. Nina got the Saints on the board with an unassisted goal four minutes and 39 seconds into the second period. The Cardinals answered 11 seconds later with a Heidi Martin goal.
The Saints controlled the third period, out-shooting the Cardinals 13-6. St. Scholastica did have to kill off a penalty late in the game. Saint Mary's pulled the goalie to have a 6-on-4 advantage, but would only get two shots on net and
Sheridan Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Ontario Hockey Academy) stopped both as part of her 16 saves on the night to give the Saints the 2-1 victory.
Friesen improved to 2-0-1 in net for CSS this season. Sarah Gustafson had 25 saves in the loss for Saint Mary's (2-4-0). After just one power-play combined for the two teams through the first two periods, both teams each had three power-plays in the third.
The Saints (7-0-2) will be in action next on Friday, December 6th when they host Adrian College (Mich.) at Mars Lakeview Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. and can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
