Saints Fall to Knights

NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team had its last regular season match of the season Saturday afternoon that resulted in a loss in straight sets to Martin Luther.

The Knights would have a 4-0 run early in the first set to get things going. Later on in the set, the Saints climbed back by scoring four of the next five points to get within one. The Knights would end the set by taking eight of the last eleven points to take the first set.

The Saints started the second set out very well as they took a 12-7 lead. The Knights responded by scoring seven of the next nine points. The rest of the set was back and forth with multiple runs by both teams, but Martin Luther came out on top 25-22.

The Saints would have a good start again in the third set with a 5-1 run early on to take an 8-5 lead. The rest of the set was back and forth until the Knights took eight of the final twelve points to take the set 25-23 and the match.

Taylor Orhn (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway HS) led the Saints with 12 kills with Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) getting 10 of her own. Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 24 assists with Emily Jansen (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) getting 10 as well. Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) led the Saints on the defensive end with 22 digs. Morrin also played well on the defensive end with 15 digs. Martin Luther was led by Rebecca Engelbrecht who had 18 kills and 13 digs.

The Saints go into the UMAC Tournament as the fourth seed and will take on top seed Northwestern this coming Wednesday in St. Paul. The action starts at 7 p.m.
