Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Superior scored a pair of third period goals and outshot the Saints 34-14 to win the first game of a home-and-home series 3-1 over the St. Scholastica women's hockey team on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints committed three penalties in the first period and the Yellowjackets made them pay on one as Kiara De kezel scored right off the faceoff to give UWS a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
CSS knotted it up five minutes into the second period when
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) scored on a tough angle from the left side of the net.
Brenna Flatley (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and
Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) assisted the goal.
The 'jackets then committed penalty after penalty, resulting in about a minute and 30 seconds total of 5-on-3 skating favoring the Saints. However, the Saints could not capitalize and the contest remained 1-1 at the second intermission.
After St. Scholastica failed to convert another power-play early in the third period, the Yellowjackets' Alison Shrift would get past the defense on a breakout and put UWS in front 2-1 with over 12 minutes remaining. Dani Schultz added insurance for the 'jackets, scoring on the power-play with 2:55 left to give UWS the 3-1 victory.
Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine/Brewster Academy (New England College)) stopped 31 shots in the loss for the Saints, while Shanley Peters had 13 saves for the Yellowjackets. CSS was 0-for-6 on the power-play, while Superior was 2-for-4.
The Saints (9-5-2, 6-4-1 NCHA) and 'jackets (9-6-0, 6-5-0 NCHA) will play game two tomorrow afternoon at Wessman Arena in Superior. The puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
