PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball on the Road this Weekend for UMAC Contests

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team will look to win its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) road games of the year as it travels to Martin Luther College on Friday and then will make the short trek to Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday.

About the Saints
Record: 4-10, 1-2 UMAC

  • The Saints picked up their first UMAC win of the year after defeating Crown College 100-56 last Saturday.
  • The 100-point performance is the 14th in program history and the first since the 2009-10 season.
  • Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) paces the Saints with 11.6 points per game.
  • Frase continues to lead the UMAC and is sixth in NCAA Division III, making 60 percent of her field goal attempts.
  • Frase has also led the team in rebounds the last three games.
  • Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) averages 10.1 points per game and is second on the team averaging 5.1 rebounds per game.
  • Hovick has 34 steals on the year, twice as many as the next Saints player.

Record: 4-10, 2-1 UMAC

  • Martin Luther lost to Northwestern College last Friday, but did pick up a win vs. North Central the following day by a score of 65-42.
  • The Knights started the season 1-9.
  • Hannah Hackbarth leads the Knights with 11.9 points per game.
  • No other Knight averages over 9.0 points per game.
  • The Knights lead the conference in rebounds per game (41.2) and are second in rebounding margin behind the Saints.
  • MLC is shooting .334 from the field and .310 from beyond the arc on the year.
  • The Knights have been outscored 439-357 in the first half this year.

Series History: (CSS is 38-15 all-time vs. Martin Luther)
  • The Saints and Knights split the two games last year.  Both teams won on their home courts with the Saints winning the last meeting at the Reif Gymnasium 69-59.

  • Bethany Lutheran is coming off a 73-59 loss to Northwestern College.
  • Jade Pelzl leads the Viking offense and is third in the conference with 14.4 points per game. 
  • Pelzl is third in the league with 34, 3-pointers made and leads the UMAC, making 80 percent of her free throws.
  • Shelby Wiederhoeft is right behind averaging a double-double, 10.5 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game. 
  • BLC leads the conference, averaging 16.5 made free throws per game.
  • The Vikings are shooting .332 from the field and .310 from beyond the arc.
  • Bethany has been outscored 496-392 in the first half this year.
