LAKE FOREST, Ill. – With all four goals coming in the first period, the St. Scholastica women's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie on Saturday night at Lake Forest College (Ill.) in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action.
The Foresters struck early as Morgan Pope scored two minutes and 33 seconds into the game. Lake Forest made it 2-0, 34 seconds later on a Jessica Dare goal.
After the goal,
Rachel Borchardt (Willow River, Minn./Willow River HS ) made her first appearance of the season in net for the Saints after re-joining the team earlier in the week due to injuries. She started 21 games in net during the team's inaugural season.
The Saints got on the scoreboard with a little over 11 minutes to go as
Alana Levido (Richmond, British Columbia/Burnaby North Secondary (Pacific Steelers)) scored a power-play goal to make it 2-1.
Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) had the assist. Two minutes and 50 seconds later,
Briget Cojocar (Limerick, Saskatchewan/Lafleche HS (Melville Prairie Fire)) scored unassisted to tie the contest at 2-2. The Saints out-shot Lake Forest 12-9 in the first period.
Borchardt was solid in net, stopping all 21 shots she saw, including some nice saves when the Foresters had a 5-on-3 advantage in the second period to earn the tie.
The Saints out-shot the Foresters in each period, except overtime when Lake Forest had a 5-2 edge. The final tally was in CSS's favor at 37-30. Stacey Dierking had 35 saves for the Foresters. Both teams combined for 11 penalties.
The Saints (11-5-4, 9-4-2 NCHA) and Foresters (11-6-2, 10-4-1 NCHA) will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
