Women’s Hockey Finishes Season Strong with Overtime Victory

The CSS women's hockey team needed overtime to take down the tenth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets 4-3 at Wessman Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The win over the Yellowjackets (15-7-3, 13-5-2 NCHA) will send the Saints to Illinois to take on the Lake Forest College Foresters as the fifth seed in the NCHA O'Brien Cup next weekend.

The Saints came out of the gate firing on all cylinders as Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) scored just 27 seconds into the game from Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) and Alana Levido (Richmond, British Columbia/Burnaby North Secondary (Pacific Steelers)) to make it 1-0 CSS.

The 'Jackets answered quickly when Haley Olmstead tied it up with a goal just a minute and a half later on assists from Kiara DeKezel and Ashlee Olson to make it 1-1.

Five minutes later the Yellowjackets took the lead when Dani Schultz scored from Sheryl Kaskiw to give UW-S a 2-1 advantage. 

Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) evened things up at the 11:13 mark when she scored on assists from Klimek and M. Waidacher making it 2-2. 

With less than two minutes to go in the period the Saints took the lead when Klimek notched her second of the period to make it 3-2 Saints.  N. Waidacher got an assist on the play and the Saints went into intermission with a one-goal advantage.

It took almost 15 minutes for a goal in the second and it came at the stick of Schultz as she scored her second of the game from Ashley Birdsall and Kerry Mayhew to tie the game at three apiece. The score would remain going into intermission number two.

The third period was a defensive one as Rachel Borchardt (Willow River, Minn./Willow River HS ) and Amy Torgerson made a combined 20 saves to send the teams into overtime all knotted up at three.

The overtime period was a quick one as M. Waidacher scored the game-winner just 15 seconds in from N. Waidacher and Klimek to give CSS a 4-3 victory.

Borchardt made 26 saves in the victory as her record improves to 2-2-2.

Klimek's four total points now gives her 22 on the season with 10 goals and 12 assists.  N. Waidacher now has 18 goals and 18 assists for a team leading 36 points.  M. Waidacher's three points gives her 29 total on the season on 11 goals and 18 assists as she notched her first game winner of the season.

The Saints (13-7-5, 11-6-3 NCHA) will travel to Lake Forest, Ill. next weekend for the quarterfinal series of the O'Brien Cup to take on the Lake Forest College Foresters (13-9-2, 12-7-1 NCHA) at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.  Stay tuned to csssaints.com for dates, times and game coverage information.
