DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's basketball teams will be on the road for their final two games of the regular season as they will face off vs. the University of  Minnesota-Morris on Friday and the Presentation College on Saturday.

Men's Basketball

Last Action: 
The Saints split this past weekend as they defeated Martin Luther College 77-55 on Friday night as Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) scored 18 of his 23 points in the first half. On Saturday night the Saints fell to the #1 team in the UMAC, Bethany Lutheran College, 62-49. MarShaan Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis North HS (Minneapolis Comm. & Tech. College)) led the way for the Saints with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

St. Scholastica Saints (12-11, 9-3 UMAC)
The Saints will either be the second seed or the third seed in the UMAC Tournament next week, which is obviously important because the No. 2 seed hosts the semifinal game next Wednesday … CSS doesn't necessarily need to win both games this weekend to have a chance at the No. 2 seed, but that is their best option of course … If CSS and Northwestern College finish with the same record and NWC defeats BLC on Friday, NWC gets the No. 2 seed … Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) leads the team in scoring and rebounding for the season, averaging 17.8 ppg and 7.6 rebounds per game (rpg) … Tester has been named UMAC Player of the Week three times on the year … Hamers is the only other player averaging double figures in points with 14.3 ppg … Hamers leads the team in 3-point shooting as well, shooting 41-percent from beyond the arc on 186 attempts and is fifth in the nation with 3.7, 3-pointers per game  …  Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) is tops on the team in the assist category averaging 4.4 per game … MarShaan Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis North HS (Minneapolis Comm. & Tech. College)) leads the team in blocks with 1.4/game … The Saints will hopefully have freshman point guard Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) back this weekend after missing last weekend due to illness … CSS shot only 30-percent from the floor vs. Bethany Lutheran on Saturday, which was its second-worst shooting performance of the season.

Minnesota-Morris Cougars (9-14, 5-7 UMAC)
The Cougars have a game advantage for the fourth final UMAC Tournament spot this weekend … Crown College and Presentation College sit a game back, while Northland is two game back, but did defeat the Cougars the first time around … Derek Schmidt and Brendon Foss are leading the team in scoring with 14.2 and 10.4 points per game, respectively … Schmidt leads the UMAC, making 55-percent of his shots from the floor … The Cougars have five players averaging four plus rebounds per game and are outrebounding their opponents 35.7.-31.8 … Brodie Raymond is shooting 35 percent from beyond the arc … The Cougars are scoring 67.9 points per game, while giving up 71.2 points per game on defense … Morris leads the conference in rebounding margin at +3.9.

The Saints won the first go around by a score of 77-64 in a game that saw Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) put up a career scoring output of 32 points, with Tester putting up 14 and 11 for a double-double. Foss led the way for the Cougars with 20.

Presentation Saints (8-15, 4-8 UMAC)
The Saints have won lost seven of nine with both wins coming by six points or less … The Saints are 5-4 at home and are just game behind Morris for the final UMAC Tournament spot … The Cougars and Saints have split both of their meeting this season … Darrell Farr has led the team in scoring in 15 games and led in rebounds in all but four games … Farr has 10 double-doubles on the year and is averaging one on the year with 16.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game … Farr is ranked 15th in Division III in rebounds per game … Quincy Davis is the next closest scorer with points per game (8.4) … As a team the Saints are scoring 64.1 points per game and are giving up 76.5 points per game on defense … Presentation is the lowest scoring team in the conference, averaging just 61.8 points per game in league play.

The first battle of the Saints was won handily by CSS with a final score of 73-62. Tester had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Farr had 24 and 10 to lead Presentation.


Women's Basketball

Last Action:
The Saints won both games this past weekend first by defeating the number one team in the conference, Martin Luther College, by a score of 69-59. Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) led the way for the Saints scoring all 14 of her points in the second half. CSS continued their winning ways as they defeated Bethany Lutheran the next night by a score of 65-50 with Hovick again leading the way with 17.

St. Scholastica Saints (11-12, 9-3 UMAC)
The Saints have won eight of nine games and finished the season with a perfect home record in conference play … That is the first time that has happened since the 1997-98 season … The Saints currently sit in third place in the conference after beating conference leader Martin Luther this past weekend and with two wins this weekend will secure a home playoff game … The Saints can finish anywhere from the No. 1 through the No. 3 seed, sitting just one game behind both Minnesota-Morris and Martin Luther … Freshman Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) has led the Saints down the stretch, leading the team in scoring the last four games and has a team-high 12.1 points per game for the year …A total of six Saints are averaging over 6.5 points per game … Hovick also leads the team in assists and steals with 3 apg and 2.6 steals per game (spg) … The Saints as a team lead the conference averaging 11.8 spg … CSS is ranked 38th in NCAA Division III in 3-point percentage (.337) … Senior captain Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) leads the team and the conference in blocks, averaging 1.9 bpg … In 10 of their 11 victories this season, the Saints have out-rebounded teams, but have been out-rebounded in all of their 12 losses … Amys leads the way in that column bringing down 7.1 per game … The Saints and their opponents have scored the exact same amount of points this season at 1480 each.

After going undefeated in the UMAC last year, Morris suffered their first conference loss this year in 29 games with a 75-73 loss at home to UMAC leader Martin Luther … The Cougars' last four games of the year are at home where they are 6-3 … Emily Mehr is leading a trio of Cougars scoring in double figures with 17.7 points per game ... Mehr has been named UMAC Player of the Week the last three weeks … Kendra Wycoff and Jenni Noordmans are close behind with 12 and 11.1 per game … Abby Fragodt is averaging 7.8 rebounds per game for Morris who is averaging 40.2 boards per game … Kelsey Erickson is averaging 4 assists per game … Morris is one of the few UMAC teams that is averaging more points scored on offense than given up on defense with 72.1 on offense and 61.9 on defense … Morris is first in the conference with a +2.57 turnover margin … UMM has already clinched a playoff spot but will need to beat CSS this weekend to capture a home playoff game.

The Saints defeated the Cougars for the first time since the 2004-05 season in the early match-up by a score of 66-62 in overtime. Hovick and Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) led the way with fourteen points each.   

Presentation Saints (4-18, 3-9 UMAC)
The Saints opened up the season on a nine-game losing streak and have currently lost eight of 10 to give them a 3-9 UMAC record … Despite the record the Saints have three players scoring double digits with Hannah Phillips leading the conference with 18.9 per game … Phillips is only one of 14 Division III players to record a triple-double this season when she had 37 points, 10 rebounds and 12 steals vs. Trinity Bible … Rachel Fuhrmann and Kelli Boekelheide are chipping in with 13.2 and 11.6 points, respectively… Chelsea Voorhees is having a solid year with 8.3 points per game to go along with 6.8 rebounds per contest as well ... The Saints are scoring only 54.9 points per game, while giving up 73 points per game on defense … Presentation has been eliminated from Tournament contention.
