Waidacher’s Late Heroics Give CSS Tie with Falcons

Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) scored with just 24 seconds left in regulation to force overtime with the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons and earn a point with a 2-2 tie at Ozaukee Arena on Friday night.

The tie with the Falcons (7-12-3, 5-10-2 NCHA) gives the Saints 21 points on the season and moves them one step closer to earning home ice in the first round of the O'Brien Cup.

The scoring began halfway through the first period when the Falcons' Bradi Jonasson scored on assists from Muriel McIntyre and Hilary Christiansen to make it 1-0 CUW.  The rest of the period remained scoreless as the Saints entered the first intermission with a one goal deficit.

The Falcons had a repeat performance in the second period being the first team to score at the 14:39 point.  Alyssa Isaackson found the back of the net on assists from Samantha Meuwissen and Sarah Cole to make it 2-0 in favor of the Falcons.

The Saints began their comeback less than a minute later when leading scorer N. Waidacher scored her 15th goal on assists from Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) and Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) to cut the Falcon lead down to one.  The score remained 2-1 and once again the Saints faced a one goal deficit at intermission.

The defense picked up for both teams in the third period as it was goal and penalty free period until the 17:52 mark when M. Waidacher was called for high-sticking.

Then with just 24 seconds left in the game N. Waidacher showed some late game heroics finding the back of the net for a short-handed goal on assists from Brenna Flatley (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) to tie the game and send it to overtime at 2-2.

The overtime period went without a goal and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Rachel Borchardt (Willow River, Minn./Willow River HS ) got the start in net for CSS making 25 saves as her record moves to 0-1-2.

N. Waidacher continues her stellar season now with 16 goals and 29 total points to lead the team.  M. Waidacher is all alone in second with a team best 15 assists and 23 points.  Klimek now has 21 points and Blair now has double digits with 10 points on three goals and seven assists.

The Saints (11-6-5, 9-5-3 NCHA) will have round two with the Falcons tomorrow afternoon at Ozaukee Arena in Mequon at 2 p.m.  Stay tuned to csssaints.com for game coverage information.
