Saints Rally Back to Defeat Martin Luther

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team rallied from a four point halftime deficit to defeat the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) leader Martin Luther by a score of 69-59 Friday night at the Reif Gymnasium.

The opening minutes of the game saw the Knights jump out to an 8-5 lead with just over four minutes gone.  The teams would eventually tie at 13 with 9:59 left in the first half.   The Knights would go on a 7-0 run to take the lead at 20-13.  The Saints battled back to cut the lead 31-27 at halftime.

In the first half, the Knights had 13 second chance points, while the Saints missed several lay-ups and allowed numerous offensive rebounds.

The second half saw Martin Luther continue it's inside presence as they scored six points and held the Saints without a field goal until the 15:40 mark with a jumper by Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)).  The Saints would trail as much as eight until Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) of the Saints took control of the game, scoring 12 straight points in a two minute stretch that put the Saints up eight points with 37 seconds left.  The Saints would go on to win 69-59.

The Knights (15-7, 9-2 UMAC) would be led by Erica Babinec who would lead all scorers with 19 points.  Amanda Burk added 13 points as well.  The Knights would finish shooting 29-percent (22-74) from the field, 11-percent (2-18) from beyond the arc, and 65-percent from the charity stripe.  The Knights would collect 54 total rebounds, 25 offensive, and commit 15 turnovers.

The Saints were led by Hovick with 14 points, 12 of those points came in the second half.  Haley Hoyer (Pelican Rapids, Minn./Pelican Rapids HS (North Dakota State College of Science)) provided a spark off of the bench scoring 12 points, while Frase added 11 points as well.

The Saints would finish shooting 42-percent (23-55) from the field, 33-percent (4-12) from beyond the arc, and 76-percent from the charity stripe.  The Saints would grab 41 rebounds and commit 19 turnovers.

The Saints (10-12, 8-3 UMAC) will be back in action tomorrow night as they take on Bethany Lutheran with the tip scheduled for 3 pm local time here at the Reif Gymnasium.  That game can be viewed on Game Central which is located on csssaints.com.
