Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored the first goal of the game against ninth-ranked Adrian College (Mich.), but the Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Saints 4-2 Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints scored with 4:05 left in the first period with a goal from
Michelle Rebeck (St. Andrews, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall).
Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) assisted on the goal. Adrian would answer one minute and 30 seconds later with a power-play goal to even the score at 1-1 going into the first intermission. The shots going in the break were 9-9.
At the 5:58 mark of period two, the Bulldogs scored once again on an even strength goal from the left slot. The Bulldogs would score two minutes later on another even strength goal to make the score 3-1, advantage Adrian.
The Saints however would answer the bell with a goal from Fischer with assists going to
Gina Dodge (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS). The goal was an even strength tally. The period would end with the Saints trailing 3-2. The Saints were outshot 9-2 in the period.
Adrian would score in the opening minutes of the third period to lead 4-2. The Saints had many power-play and even strength opportunities to chip into the lead, but were unable to as Bulldogs goaltender Brittany Zeches held tough and the Saints would eventually fall 4-2.
Adrian (8-2, 5-2 NCHA) came in ranked ninth in the latest Division III hockey polls. The Bulldogs were able to connect for 34 shots on goal and were 1-for-5 on the power play. The Bulldogs did commit 10 penalties for 28 minutes. Zeches had 28 saves while in net.
CSS had a strong performance of their own, creating 30 shots on goal, but were unable to convert on the power-play, going 0-for-8. The Saints had six penalties for 12 minutes.
St. Scholastica (3-2-2, 2-2-1 NCHA) will face Adrian again tomorrow night to close out the two-game series against the Bulldogs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time. The game will be broadcasted live on Saints Sports Net via csssaints.com.
