MANCHESTER, N.H. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday evening, falling to Saint Anselm College (N.H.) 5-2 in the Saint Anselm College Invitational at Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks controlled the puck in the CSS zone for much of the first period, outshooting the Saints 10-3. The Saints were able to kill off a pair of Saint Anselm power-plays in the period. The Hawks were able to get the lone goal of the period when Tiffany Herron put in a rebound midway through the period.
The Hawks gave themselves a 2-0 lead on a Courtney Winters power-play goal two minutes into the second period.
Briget Cojocar (Limerick, Saskatchewan/Lafleche HS (Melville Prairie Fire)) got the Saints on the scoreboard midway through the second period, converting a breakaway goal to make it 2-1.
Jana Henry (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate HS (Thunder Bay Midget AA Queens)) and
Kaitlin Johnston (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater HS) had the assists. For Cojocar it was her first goal of the season.
However, Saint Anselm would get another power-play opportunity at the end of the period and converted again on an Aly Zappen goal to make it 3-1 at the second intermission.
With nine minutes left in the third period, Andi Foss increased the Hawks lead to 4-1. With under five minutes in the game
Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) scored her second goal of the season to keep the Saints within reach, but the Hawks would add an empty-netter with a minute to go to make the final score 5-2.
The Hawks outshot the Saints 29-16 in the contest.
Sheridan Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Ontario Hockey Academy) made 24 saves in the loss for CSS, while Amy Zappen made 14 saves for the Hawks (7-4-0). CSS finished 0-for-6 on the power-play, while the Hawks were 2-for-5.
The Saints (8-3-1) will face Salve Regina (R.I.) tomorrow at Sullivan Arena on the campus of Saint Anselm. Salve Regina defeated the College of Saint Benedict in the first game of the day today by a score of 6-3. Action begins at 1 p.m. eastern time.
