Saints Defeat Morris in Overtime Thriller

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team scored a game-tying lay-up as time expired to send the contest into overtime and then would eventually outscore the Cougars 9-5 in the extra session to win 66-62 Saturday afternoon at the Reif Gymnasium.

The Saints and Cougars opened up the game trading baskets with Morris taking the earlier advantage 16-10.  Both teams committed multiple turnovers in the early stages and the score was frozen at 16-10 for about a five minute span.  The Saints went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 16 apiece with 8 minutes left in the half.

The half closed out with Morris leading 27-21.  The teams committed 30 combined turnovers, 16 by the Saints and 14 by the Cougars.  The Cougars would finish the first half shooting 40-percent (10-25) from the field, 33-percent (3-9) from beyond the arc, and 50-percent (4-8) from the charity stripe.

The Saints finished out the first half shooting 26-percent (9-34) from the field, 33-percent (1-3) from beyond the arc, and 100-percent (2-2) from the charity stripe.  The leading scorer for the Saints in the first half was Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) with 6 points.

The Saints opened up the second half on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 31-29 with 16:36 left to play.  The Saints and Cougars would trade baskets for an extended period during the second half with Morris never gaining a lead larger than six points.

The final ten seconds were the most interesting part of the game as Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) drove the left side of lane and missed a lay-up in traffic, only to grab her missed shot and make a put back with 1.2 seconds remaining.  Hovick would then steal the ensuing inbounds pass by Morris and miss a jump-shot as time expired to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, CSS and Morris switched leads until the Saints captured a 63-60 lead with a lay-up by McKernon.  The Saints would make a lay-up and then Hovick would make a free-throw to help the Saints win 66-62 in front of many alumni here for Alumni Weekend.

UM-Morris (9-8, 5-2 UMAC) would have two players in double figures, scoring 19 and 15 points respectively.  The Cougars would finish shooting 35-percent from the field, 21-percent from beyond the arc, and 69-percent from the charity stripe.  The Cougars would collect 37 rebounds and commit 20 turnovers.
