Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team started out fast and never looked back as they finished the weekend on a winning note, defeating the Northwestern College Eagles 80-38 Saturday afternoon at Reif Gymnasium.
The Saints started out quick scoring two quick 3-pointers. The Eagles would finally get on the scoreboard two minutes into the game. The teams would trade baskets for the rest of the half, with no team going a scoring run larger than four points. The Saints would get a lay-up as the buzzer sounded. The buzzer looked to initially sound before the shot, but after a referee conference, the basket counted and the
Saints would take a 39-20 lead into halftime.
The second half was more of the same as the Saints would never allow the lead to get under 21 and would build leads as large as 40 throughout the half. Both teams used their benches for the remainder of the second half and the Saints would eventually win by a score of 80-38.
For the Eagles (5-11, 2-3 UMAC), Mollie Sir would be the leading scorer with 14 points, the only Eagle player in double figures. The Eagles would shoot 30-percent from the field, 16-percent from beyond the arc, and 78-percent from the charity stripe. The Eagles would grab 30 rebounds and commit 26 turnovers.
For the Saints,
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) would score a career high 19 points to pace the Saints.
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) added 14 points, while
Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) and
Taylor Fellbaum (Minong, Wis./Northwood HS) scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Emily Glomski (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/Dhahran HS) would score 5 points coming off of the bench.
The Saints would shoot 49-percent from the field, 53-percent from beyond the arc, 71-percent from the charity stripe, grab 39 total rebounds, and only commit 12 turnovers. This victory was the largest margin of victory, 42 points, for either team in the series.
