PREVIEW: Basketball Set To Host First Weekend UMAC Games

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's basketball teams will be back home for the first half of four straight home games this weekend as they face off against Crown College on Friday and Northwestern College on Saturday at Reif Gymnasium.

Men's Basketball

Last Action: 
The Saints split their first weekend UMAC series of the year this past weekend as they were defeated by the conference's preseason pick to finish second Bethany Lutheran College by a score of 65-58 on Friday night. CSS bounced back the next night to pick up their second UMAC victory of the year as they defeated Martin Luther 69-61. Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had 40 points combined in the two games, including a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in the win vs. MLC.

St. Scholastica Saints (5-9, 2-1 UMAC)
After starting the season 0-6, the Saints have won four out of their last five games … The play of Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) and Tester has been a big reason for the turnaround as they have averaged 19.6 and 19.4 points per game (ppg), respectively, during these last five games … Tester leads the team in scoring and rebounding for the season averaging 18.1 ppg and 7.1 rebounds per game (rpg) … Tester is just 30 points away from becoming the tenth player in program history to record 1,000 career points …  Hamers is the only other player averaging double figures in points with 14.1 ppg … Hamers leads the team in 3-point shooting as well shooting 38.4-percent from beyond the arc on 125 attempts and is eighth in the nation with 3.4 3-pointers per game  … Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) is tops on the team in the assist category averaging 4.6 per game and MarShaan Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis North HS (Minneapolis Comm. & Tech. College)) leads the team in blocks with 1.6/game … The Saints are 4-2 in the Reif this year, but are only 1-5 away from Duluth … CSS had its best performance of the season from the free throw line vs. Martin Luther, going 16-of-21 for 76-percent.

Crown Storm (2-12, 1-2 UMAC)
The Storm have only won two games this year, but have scored over sixty in each of their last five games, including a 91-79 victory over Presentation to pick up their first UMAC win of the year last weekend . .. Crown is coming off a 85-77 loss at North Central on Tuesday night … David Glover has led the team in scoring throughout the year and has led the team in seven games so far this year … Glover is averaging 14.6 points pre game … Two of his teammates, Truman Shelter and Taylor Jones, are also averaging double figures with 11.6 and 10.6 per game as well … Anthijuan Beeks Jr. is leading the team with 6.5 rebounds per game … As a team the Storm is averaging 61.7 points per game and giving up 82.1 points per game … The Storm are picked to finish sixth, according to the UMAC preseason coaches' poll.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Crown: 22-3)
The Saints won both games between the two teams last year and when they defeated the Storm 74-66 in early February. It was the team's final win of the year.

Northwestern Eagles (7-7, 2-1 UMAC)
Northwestern made its first NCAA Division III Tournament last season after capturing the conference's automatic qualifier … The Eagles, the coaches' preseason favorite to win the league again, have struggled as of late as they have only won two of their last five, with both of those wins coming in conference play against Crown and Presentation … The Eagles lost a close one vs. Minnesota-Morris 69-66 this past weekend as it was their first home UMAC regular season loss since December, 5th 2009 … Wade Chitwood has led the Eagles in scoring in eight of their fourteen games and has gone over 20 points five times this year, including a 31-point output in a win over Luther … Chitwood is averaging 17.9 points per game … Tom Gisler is the only other player averaging double figures with 12.1 per game … Gabe Jefferson is bringing down a team leading 6.1 rebounds per game … As a team the Eagles are outscoring their opponents 70.2 to 65.6.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Northwestern: 23-40)
The Eagles shot the lights out at Reif Gymnasium last season, shooting 77-percent in the first half and 61-percent for the game in an 81-58 victory over the Saints.


Women's Basketball

Last Action:
The Saints lost both games this weekend as they were defeated 68-59 vs. Bethany  Lutheran on Friday and lost 65-50 on Saturday night vs. Martin Luther. Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) had a career-high 18 points vs. Bethany.

St. Scholastica Saints (3-11, 1-2 UMAC)
After winning the conference opener vs. Northland early last week, the Saints lost both games on the road to MLC and BLC this past weekend … CSS looks to take the momentum from the win in the opener deep into conference play … Kayla Heisler (Remer, Minn./Northland HS) and Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) are leading the way in scoring this year with 10.6 and 10.4 points per game … Hovick also leads the team in assists and steals with 2.7 apg and 3.1 steals per game (spg) … The Saints also lead the conference averaging 11.6 spg … Senior captain Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) leads the team in blocks averaging 2 bpg and is only seven shy from tying the program record for blocks in a career … In their three victories this season, the Saints have out-rebounded teams, but have been out-rebounded in all of their 11 losses … Since starting the season with a high free throw percentage, CSS has seen that plummet, making less than 50-percent in two of the last four games.

Crown Storm (1-10, 0-3 UMAC)
The Storm opened up the season with a five-game losing streak, beat Crossroads 93-21 and are once again on a five-game losing streak entering the weekend … Other than their win, the Storm have not scored over 55 points this year … Judy Mundt has led the team in scoring in nine games this year and is averaging 17.5 points per game … Mundt is also leading the way with 2.3 assists per game and 2.4 steals per game … The next closest player is Sam Brueggerman with 6.8 points per game … Mary Voss is leading the way on the boards with 8.1 per game … As a team the Storm is averaging 45.3 points per game while giving up 77.4 … Crown was unanimously picked to finish last in the preseason coaches poll.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Crown: 25-0)
The Saints won both games last year by over 35 points and won 86-44 to complete the season at home.

Northwestern Eagles (5-9, 2-1 UMAC)
The Eagles have lost four of their last six, including an 82-78 loss to Morris at home … This weekend's game will start a four game-road stretch for Northwestern … Mollie Sir, Kristin Sczublewski and Chanel Madson are leading the way scoring this year with 13.9, 12.4 and 12 per game respectively … Jessica Fife is almost averaging a double-double with 9.4 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game … Sczublewski is leading the team with 4.8 assists per game and 2.3 steals per game … The Eagles are averaging 59 points per game on offense, while giving up close to that with 60.6 points per game … The Eagles are picked to finish third, according to the UMAC preseason coaches poll.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Northwestern: 38-31)
The Saints were swept by Northwestern last year by virtually identical scores of 69-54 and 62-54.
