Martin Luther uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Saints

Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team shot 46-percent from the free throw line and was out-scored 37-26 in the second half in a 65-50 loss at Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon.

The lead would change hands 11 times in the first half and there was also four ties in the first 20 minutes. The Saints led by as much as six midway through the half, but the Knights out-scored CSS 15-2 over an eight-minute span following to take a seven-point lead. A Kayla Heisler (Remer, Minn./Northland HS) 3-pointer cut the MLC halftime lead to 28-24.

The Saints shot 31-percent from the field and were only 4-of-10 from the free throw line. The Knights shot 32-percent, but were 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Martin Luther also had a 17-7 advantage in second-chance points.

The Saints kept the game within reach for the first seven minutes of the second half, but the Knights went on a 19-5 run to pull away and take a 20-point lead with four minutes to go. Martin Luther remained unbeaten in conference play with a 65-50 victory.

The Saints finished at 32-percent shooting from the field and were 11-for-24 from the free throw line for the game. The Knights shot 46-percent in the second half and 39-percent for the game. They out-rebounded the Saints 48-37. The MLC bench also pitched in with 17 points in the second half.

Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 12 points to lead the Saints and also recorded six rebounds, matching Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) for a team-high. Heisler and Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) each added eight points. Heisler had four steals in the contest. Erica Babinec led three Knights (8-5, 3-0 UMAC) in double-figures with a game-high 17 points.

The Saints (3-11, 1-2 UMAC) will be back at home next weekend when they host Crown College on Friday night and Northwestern College on Saturday at Reif Gymnasium. Friday night's game against Crown will begin at 5:30 p.m. and can be seen live on csssaints.com.
