Women’s Basketball Struggles vs. St. Ben’s

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Poor shooting and turnovers hurt the St. Scholastica women's basketball team in a 95-46 loss to the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon at the MIAC/UMAC Challenge.

The Blazers led from the onset, jumping out to a 38-9 lead. St. Ben's led at the half 51-15. CSS shot 15-percent from the field in the half on 4-of-26 shooting. Meanwhile, the Blazers shot 61-percent from the floor.

The margin remained above 35 points in the second half with St. Ben's closing the game on a 12-1 run to win by 49 points.

CSS finished at 24-percent shooting for the game, but were 18-for-23 from the free throw line. The Blazers shot 48-percent for the game and made eight, 3-pointers. The Saints committed 28 turnovers, which led to 31 points for St. Ben's.

Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) led the Saints with 12 points. Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) added 10 points off the bench. Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) had a team-high seven rebounds. The Blazers (2-0) had 15 different players score with Whitney Canton leading the way with 12 points.

The Saints (0-3) will be in action next at the Quality Inn & Suites Turkey Shootout, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday and Sunday next weekend. The Saints will open with the host, UW-Stout on Saturday at 5 p.m.
