Women’s Basketball Unable to Hold off St. Kate’s

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team lost a second half lead for the second straight game in a 69-63 loss to St. Catherine University on Friday night at the MIAC/UMAC Challenge, hosted by the College Saint Benedict.

The Saints held the lead early on, but the first half would go back-and-forth with six ties and 11 lead changes. St. Kate's had the biggest lead of the half of six points. The Wildcats went into the locker room with a 37-35 lead.

CSS shot 46-percent in the first half and were 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) had 11 points and a team-high four rebounds.

The Saints then came out on fire in the second half, going on a 10-0 run to take a 45-37 lead. St. Scholastica continued to lead by eight with 14 minutes to go, but St. Kate's went on an 8-1 run to get back into the game.

However, CSS continued to hold onto the lead until with over eight minutes to go, the Wildcats got on top of the Saints and just like the season opener CSS could not get it back. The Saints cut it to one after a pair of Doucette free throws with 52 seconds left, but the Wildcats hung on for the 69-63 win.

The Saints shot 39-percent for the game, while St. Kate's was 37-percent from the field. The Wildcats drained six, 3-pointers on the night and outscored the Saints 25-11 on second-chance points.

Doucette led CSS with a career-high 19 points. Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) chipped in with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) was also in double-figures with 10 points. Jule Muegge led all-scorers with 25 points for the Wildcats (1-0).

The Saints (0-2) will face the host of the challenge, the College of Saint Benedict, tomorrow at 3 p.m.
