MANKATO, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's cross country team won the Bethany Lutheran Invitational on Saturday with a total of 62 points.

It was the first time as a team that the Saints won a meet outside of the conference meet since the Pine Hill Invitational in 2006. North Central University was second with 79 points and the University of Minnesota-Morris was third with 83 points.

Every Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) team took part in the meet since this will be same course where the conference championship meet will be held at the end of the month.

In unfavorable racing conditions with temperatures in the mid-80s, the Saints had five runners place in the top 20 overall. Alex Schoneberger (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) led the charge again with a fourth place finish in a time of 28:50. Tony Bye (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS) was the next Saint to cross the finish line in ninth with a time of 29:48.

Charlie Habermann (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) had a sold finish in 14th place with a time of 30:19. Ethan Schubert (Two Harbors, Minn./Home School) was behind him in 15th, posting a time of 30:32. Glen Gross (Hoyt Lakes, Minn./Mesabi East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) was the final Saint to score in 20th overall, finishing in a time of 30:49.

Matthew Quanrud (Preston, Minn./Filmore Central HS) was 21st with a time of 30:54 and Ben Carlson (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS (Saint Mary’s)) was 24th with a time of 31:11.

The Saints will be split up next weekend as runners who met the team's qualifying mark will compete at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational, while the rest of the team will take part in the Crown Invitational. The Brooks Invitational begins at 10:15 a.m., while the Crown Invitational starts at 11:15 a.m.
