PREVIEW: Basketball Teams to Complete First Round-Robin of UMAC Play this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's basketball teams will resume Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play when they both travel to the University of Minnesota-Morris and Presentation College this weekend.

Friday vs. Presentation: Women @ 5:30 p.m., Men @ 7:30 p.m.
Saturday vs. Morris: Women @ 3:00 p.m., Men @ 5:00 p.m.

Last Action:
The Saints split a pair of UMAC games this past weekend with Crown College and Northwestern College. #Danny Schmitz# was the game-high scoring leader in both contests. Schmitz led the way with 28 points in the 83-67 victory over Crown on Friday night. Schmitz would again lead the game in scoring with 19, but the Saints would lose to Northwestern 79-64 on Saturday night.

St. Scholastica Saints (6-10, 3-2 UMAC)
The Saints are in a tie for second place in the UMAC standings as of right now … CSS has won four of its last six, including three of their last five UMAC games … The Saints have scored over 67 points in all six of their victories, but have only accumulated that many points in one of their 10 losses … CSS has won three of the four games where they have scored over 80 points on the year … #Brett Tester# leads the way in scoring and rebounding with 14.8 points 7.2 boards per game … Schmitz, #Derek Anderson#, and #Sean Mayberry# are all scoring 12 or more points per game … #Pat Franko# has seen his minutes increase over the past five games and has made the most of his opportunities as he averaged 5.8 points over the five game span … Schmitz needs just 33 points to become the ninth Saint to reach 1,000 career points … As a team the Saints are scoring 65 points per game, but are giving up 73.3 points per game on defense.

The other Saints have lost four of six, including four of five UMAC games, but surprisingly defeated the preseason favorite and CSS's other opponent on the weekend trip, Minnesota-Morris, 83-78 in OT … Channing Coffey is the only player in the UMAC, who is averaging over 20 points per game as he is consistently dropping 20.2 points per contest … Teammate Josh Muellner is one of three players scoring 16 plus points per game in the UMAC at 16.8 points per game … Coffey is also leading the UMAC in rebounding with 8.9 boards per game … Coffey has gone over 20 points eight times this year, including three times over 33 points with a season-high 36 coming against Crown … The Saints are averaging 78.6 points per game for second best in the UMAC, while giving up 86.6 points per game, which is second worst.

CSS won the battle of the Saints as they defeated Presentation 66-63 in the first round of the UMAC playoffs last season. Tester and Schmitz each had 15 points with #Jonah Dahlman# pitching in with 14.

Minnesota-Morris Cougars (7-9, 3-2 UMAC)
The Cougars are tied with CSS for second place in UMAC standings as both teams are sitting at 3-2 in conference play … After losing six in a row earlier in the season the Cougars have bounced back and have won four of their last five games … Morris has two overtime games so far this year, and have lost both of them by six points each … Eric Dalbey and Phil Allen are the only Cougars averaging double-digits in scoring with 14.3 and 11.5 points per game … Derek Schmidt is leading the team in rebounding with six rebounds per game … Morris is one of two teams in the UMAC who is outscoring their opponents, the Cougars are scoring 78.1 points per game while giving up 71.7 points per game.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Morris: 11-11)
CSS lost their final game of the year last season to Morris as they fell 83-49 in the UMAC Tournament Championship game. It was the Saints' fifth road game in a row. Morris shot 68-percent from the floor and went 8-for-9 on three point attempts, while CSS was 1-for-12 from beyond the arc.

The Saints women also split their weekend games as they defeated Crown College and lost to Northwestern College. CSS defeated Crown 75-39 behind #Bri Allen#'s double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. 13 players scored for the Saints. CSS fell the next night against Northwestern as the UMAC's leading scorer, Katie Dewitt, dropped 24 points and would be named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. #Taylor Fellbaum# would score a career-high of 17 points for the Saints.

St. Scholastica Saints (5-11, 2-3 UMAC)
The Saints are off to a bumpy start in UMAC play as they are 2-3 to begin the year … Bri Allen (West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) continues to lead the team in scoring as she is the only Saint averaging in double figures with 11.8 points per game as she scored 26 points in the two weekend games combined … #Kayla Heisler# has been flirting with double-digits scoring for most of the season as she is at 7.9 points per game to be the team's second leading scorer… #Laura Amys# continues to be strong down low as she is bringing down a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game, which is good for seventh in the UMAC … Amys is also averaging 1.2 blocks per game, which puts her fourth in the UMAC … As a team the Saints are scoring 55.4 points per game, while giving up 62.9 points per game on defense.

Presentation Saints (7-9, 2-3 UMAC)

The Cougars of Minnesota-Morris were unanimously picked to finish first in the UMAC preseason poll just like their male counterparts and have started the season 10-6 and perfect in the UMAC with a 5-0 start … The Cougars are 7-2 inside the P.E. Center, but are just 3-4 away from home … Morris has won six consecutive games … Steph Roggenbuck is third in the UMAC with 17.1 points per game … Emily Mehr and Tara Thielke are both over 10 points per game as well … Brandi Cresap is the nation's leader in assists to turnover ratio at 5.3… As a team the Cougars are averaging 73.9 points per game, while giving up 65.1 per contest on defense.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Morris: 3-14)
The Cougars defeated the Saints by a score of 58-51 in their final match-up of the season last year. Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Roggenbuck led the game in scoring with 18 points for the Cougars.
