RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team hung with the second-ranked University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons, but the Falcons prevailed on Friday night at Hunt Arena 4-2.
The Falcons (14-0-1, 10-0-1 NCHA) scored the first goal with 8:21 left in the first period when Jami Weiss scored an even-handed goal. Both teams combined for five penalties in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Four minutes and 29 seconds into the second period, the Falcons capitalized with a short-handed goal by Emma Nordness to make the score 2-0. The Saints (7-10-1, 5-7-1 NCHA) cut the margin in half with seven minutes to go in the period when #Libby Guzzo# scored her sixth of the season, all of which coming in the last seven games.
The score remained 2-1 into the third period when River Falls once again made it a two-goal game on a Katie Flanagan goal just 47 seconds into the period. CSS cut it back to one just 68 seconds later with a goal by #Briana Stephens#. #Michelle Rebeck# had the assist.
However, the Falcons made it a 4-2 game on a power-play goal by Alyssa Black with 5:29 to go to make that the final score.
#Rachel Borchardt# recorded a season-high 47 saves in the loss, while the Falcons' Cassi Campbell had 17 saves in the win. CSS finished 0-for-4 on the power-play, while the Falcons were just 1-for-7.
The Saints and Falcons will be on the ice again tomorrow to finish up the series. The action is set to begin at 2:05 p.m.
