PREVIEW: Basketball Teams to Take Weekend Trip to the Cities for UMAC Games

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's basketball teams will resume Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play when they both travel to the Twin Cities to play Crown College and Northwestern College.

Game Times:
Friday vs. Crown: Women @ 5:30 p.m., Men @ 7:30 p.m.
Saturday vs. Northwestern: Women @ 3:00 p.m., Men @ 5:00 p.m.

The Saints won their final non-conference game of the year against Finlandia 89-79 on Tuesday. The Saints were led by their bench play as they outscored the Lions 44-25 and almost outscored the Saints starters as they accounted for 44 of the team's 89 points. The bench play was led by #Sean Mayberry# who pitched in 31 points and seven assists. #Pat Franko# also had a big game off the bench as he scored a career-high 11 points in just nine minutes of play. Mayberry and Franko combined to go 12-14 from the charity stripe.

The Saints have won two in a row and three of their last four to start off the season 2-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play … The Saints have scored over 67 points in all five of their victories, but have failed to reach that number in their nine losses … #Brett Tester# continues to have a hot hand as he just missed a double-double in his last game to bring his scoring up to 15.0 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game to lead the Saints in both categories … Junior transfer Sean Mayberry (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) has moved himself up to third on the team in scoring after his 31-point outburst on Tuesday night vs. Finlandia … Since joining the team over the holiday break, Mayberry is 8-15 from beyond the arc and is averaging 13.3 points per game and has gone over double-digits in scoring in three of the four games … Pat Franko (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) has seen his minutes increase over the past few games and has made the most of his opportunities as he averaged five points over the four games including a career-high 11 on Tuesday night vs. Finlandia … As a team the Saints are scoring 63.8 points per game, but are giving up 73.4 points per game on defense.

Crown Storm (1-11, 1-2 UMAC)
The Storm were picked to finish eighth in the UMAC preseason poll and have started off the season 1-10 with their lone win coming last week against fellow UMAC opponent Presentation College by a score of 85-74 … The Storm have lost five games so far this year by 30 points or more … The Storm have three players averaging double figures in scoring this year with David Glover and RJ Walker at 14.8 and 14.2 respectively … Shavonte Green and Walker are the team's leading rebounders with 5.6 and 5.5 respectively … Walker has two double-doubles on the year so far … Glover is shooting 44-percent from beyond the arc to give him fourth in the UMAC … As a team, Crown is averaging 63.2 points a game, while giving up 88.0 points per game on the defensive side of the ball.

The Saints defeated the Storm 73-71 in a close game in the latter half of the season. #Logan Schultz#, #Danny Schmitz# and Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) all scored in double figures to lead the Saints. Tester sunk two free throws with two seconds left on the clock to give the Saints the two-point victory.

Northwestern Eagles (8-6, 2-1 UMAC)
After the winning the regular season UMAC title last year with a record of 13-1, the Eagles were picked to finish second this year in the preseason poll, one spot ahead of CSS … The Eagles have opened up strong in the 2010-2011 campaign by scoring 60-plus points in all 14 games so far this year … Four players are averaging over 10 points per game with Wade Chitwood leading them all with 13.2 per game … Gabe Jefferson is leading the team in rebounds with 6.3 boards per game … The Eagles are scoring 73.1 points per game while giving up only 72.5 per game on defense.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Northwestern: 15-34)
After losing both of the regular season match-ups by a combined thirteen points the Saints upended the No. 1 seeded Eagles in the UMAC tournament 75-71 to advance to the Championship game. Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) scored a game-high 26 points with Tester dropping in 19 to lead the Saints.

The Saints fell in the non-conference finale to the Finlandia Lions 73-70 on Tuesday night. With twelve lead changes and four ties the Lions won the game behind good play from their young team … #Bri Allen# led the Saints in scoring with 17 points, five rebounds and five steals on the night … #Caitlin McKernon# and #Kelly Cinquegrani# also hit double-digits with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

St. Scholastica Saints (4-10, 1-2 UMAC)
After losing two in a row and three of four the Saints will look to get back to their winning ways as they play kick-off the weekend series with a team they have never lost to: Crown … CSS is 22-0 all-time in games with the Storm … Bri Allen (West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) continues to lead the team in scoring as she is the only Saint averaging in double figures with 11.5 points per game … #Kayla Heisler# has been flirting with double-digits scoring for most of the season as she is at 8.7 points per game and got close with 9.8 earlier in the year after a 22-point game vs. Northland … #Laura Amys# continues to be strong down low as she is bringing down a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game which is good for seventh in the UMAC … Amys is also averaging 1.2 blocks per game which puts her fourth in the UMAC … As a team the Saints are scoring 54.1 points per game, while giving up 64.1 points per game on defense.

Crown Storm (0-3, 0-13 UMAC)
Crown College was picked to finish eighth in the UMAC preseason poll and has started off the season with a 12-game losing streak after losing every game by at least thirty points … Crown fell to the conference favorite, Minnesota-Morris, 95-33 in their last conference game … The Storm have gone over 60 points once on the year … Judy Mundt and Misa Matetich have combined to lead the Storm in scoring in all 13 games so far this year … Mundt is averaging 15.8 points per game and Matetich is scoring 11.3 per game … Mundt is also the team's leading rebounder with 4.7 per contest … As a team the Storm is averaging 42.0 points per game, while giving up close to triple figures at 97.2 per contest.

The Saints defeated the Storm 61-23 last year. Twelve different players scored for the Saints in the victory. The Saints broke a program record in the win with 74 rebounds.

The Eagles of Northwestern were picked to finish second in the UMAC preseason poll just like their male counterparts and have started the season 5-9 … When comparing opponents both teams defeated UW-Superior … The Eagles pushed the Yellowjackets into overtime and defeated them 81-80 … Katie Dewitt is the only Eagle over double digits in scoring per game at 19.5 to give her tops in the UMAC and was at one point in the top 10 in the nation for scoring … Dewitt has five double-doubles on the year, but has missed some time due to injury … Mollie Sir and Megan Myhre are at 9.7 and 9.5 points per game … As a team the Eagles are scoring 62.5 points per game and giving up 65.1 points per game.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Northwestern: 36-27)
The Saints defeated the Eagles 69-51 in the final home game of the year last year. #Erin Morstad# scored 15 points to lead the Saints in scoring. Dewitt had 27 to lead the Eagles.
