DULUTH, Minn. – Martin Luther College used a 12-0 run in the second half to break open a close game to defeat the St. Scholastica women's basketball team 65-57 on Saturday afternoon at Reif Gymnasium.
Both teams played a tightly contested first half with the lead changing hands seven times with seven ties. The Saints and Knights each had leads of five points in the half, but that was as high as the margin got. Both teams made 14 field goals, including four, 3-pointers. The only difference was the Saints made one more free throw.
The Saints (4-9, 1-2 UMAC) bench outscored Martin Luther's bench 17-2. #Laura Amys# had nine rebounds off the bench in 11 minutes of action.
The game remained close until the Knights (2-9, 1-2 UMAC) went on a 12-0 run midway through the second half to open up a 57-47 lead. CSS knocked it down to three with 3:24 on the clock following a #Taylor Fellbaum# jumper. However, the Saints did not score rest of the game and Knights made five free throws in the final 1:07 to win by a score of 65-57.
St. Scholastica shot just 28-percent in the second half to finish at 34-percent for the game. Martin Luther shot 44-percent for the game. The Saints out-rebounded the Knights 47-37.
The Saints were led by #Bri Allen# with 16 points. #Caitlin McKernon# just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) had a team-high 11 rebounds. Erica Babinec netted 20 points to lead the Knights, while Sarah Free had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
