DULUTH, Minn. – #Frankie Bergman# scored the first three goals of her collegiate career as the St. Scholastica women's hockey team cruised to a 6-0 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) victory over the Marian University Sabres on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
CSS improves to 6-9-1 on the season (4-6-1 NCHA), while Marian remains winless at 0-14-1 (0-10-0 NCHA).
The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Saints and junior goaltender #Rachel Borchardt#, who stopped five shots against the Sabres.
#Keri Pickel# got the Saints on the board at the 8:31 mark of the first period with her first of the season, with assists from linemates #Jana Henry# and #Libby Guzzo#.
Just 90 seconds later, Bergman began a run of four goals by the Saints in four minutes and 27 seconds, as she netted her first of the year with an assist from #Briget Cojocar#.
The Saints went on the powerplay immediately following the Bergman score and just 26 seconds later, Guzzo scored her fifth goal in as many games to bring the Saints' lead up to 3-0. Henry had her second assist of the night on the Guzzo goal.
Bergman scored again at the 13:04 mark of the first with an assist by #Cara McMannis#. The two would hook up again for Bergman's final goal of the night at the 5:25 mark of the second period.
To close out the first period scoring, #Brian Stephens# netted her fourth of the year with an unassisted tally which deflected off of a Sabre defender.
After the first period, the Saints out-shot the Sabres 15-3, and they to stand tall defensively, allowing just one shot in each of the second and third periods.
Goaltender Jalan Jaskot took the loss for Marian, allowing five goals in the first period. Kaytlin Ruzicka looked admirable in relief, stopping 20 of 21 shots in the game's final two periods.
CSS finished with six penalties for twenty minutes while Marian had eight for sixteen. The Saints went one-for-seven on powerplays while the Sabres were scoreless in four opportunities.
